Dogsick. (Like homesick, but different.)

How do people with human children do this? How do you leave them for more than 24 hours? I’m getting all antsy at the thought of leaving my greyhound girl for 8 days, even though she’s going to be with my mother, the greatest dog-lover that ever lived. I assume it gets easier after the first time?

Will you just look at those ears? Killing.me.softly.

  1. I hate to admit this, but for me it never gets easier. Bernie was exiled for 24 hours this weekend due to aversion to children and I missed him so much. He was in great hands and less than a block away and I still checked on him more than once.

  2. I think you can trust your mother – she loves you and she loves dogs! But I understand completely. I left my young dog (my first dog) with a friend who was house sitting at my house, and my dog died while we were gone. It was and still is horrible, but I think this is a rare situation. Be sure your mother has the number for your regular vet, the emergency vet you trust, and maybe a mobile vet (yes, after losing a pet I am this organized).

Dogs are pure love and pure devotion – it is always hard to leave them – but if you learn to leave them in a healthy way it is best for both of you. You never know, after 8 days you might come home and find your dog is madly in love with your mother!

Have a good trip (you can’t find a better person to leave your “baby” with)!

    • Oh my goodness! I bet your friend felt terrible. Are you still friends? I’m such a pet mom spaz that I have a little “manual” for my mom when she arrives. She’s just going to think that’s hysterical. And, for sure, she’ll be in love with my mom.

  3. I cried almost daily when we went to Hawaii a few years ago because I couldn’t’ t stop thinking about our dog and wondering if she felt abandoned. It was easier the next year though.

  4. For me, it never gets easier. I LOVE my pets! My cat is the sweetest psychopath that you will ever meet in the feline world and my Kaylee pooch is my best friend! All three of our pets are rescues and they seem to latch onto your heart and never let go! At least as a pet mum…
We dropped Kaylee off just to get GROOMED and I was on the verge of tears.
Every single day that I come home, I am just as excited to see her as she is to wrap her stubby arms around me for a happy, wide grinned hug!
I’d love to travel, but when I do, I miss her so much.
